Gaspe Peninsula and New Brunswick

For years Bruce has wanted to trek around the Gaspe, a narrow peninsula northeast of Maine between the St. Lawrence River and New Brunswick province. To reach Gaspe, Bruce drove to the northern tip of Maine, passed through Edmunston, N.B. and crossed a bit of New Brunswick known as the Republic of Madawaska.

Once in Quebec province, Bruce continued north to the St. Lawrence river.

Note the third name on the sign. Yes, that's the actual name of a town in Quebec, including the exclamation points.

The harbor at Riviere-du-Loup in western Gaspe...

...and its beautiful Catholic church.

A church typical of those in villages along the St. Lawrence River...

...and a typical village.

Most towns have a crucifix or statue such as this one...

...and some have lighthouses.

The road along the the north side of the Gaspe Peninsula runs between miles of dramatic natural rock formations...

...and the shore of the St. Lawrence River, on which are hundreds of small "sculptures" such as these.

Notre Dame des Douleurs, a shrine and pilgrimage site just ourside of the town of Gaspe.

Detail of the statue's halo - many such statues have halos made of blue light bulbs.

Foliage on the grounds of the shrine.

Motel room in the heart of the town of Perce, the major tourist center of Gaspe.

Detail of the furniture and carpeting in the motel room.

The ???, a ??? just off a western point of Perce in the Atlantic.

On the way back from Gaspe, Bruce stopped in the New Brunswick capital city of Frederickton and once again visited the city's cathedral where Bruce and Jennifer had a private morning service a few years before (they were the only ones to show up for the service).
